For windows XP:
Start –> Control Panel –> Under Pick a catergory, click Network and Internet Connections –> Under "or pick a Control Panel icon," click Network Connections –> Click the icon for Create a new connection under Network Tasks –> Click Next –> Select Connect to the Internet –> Click Next –> Click on the "Set up my connection manually" bubble –> Click Next –> Choose the "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on" bubble –> Click Next –> Click Finish to Close the Wizard.
Now you need to set the IP address and other information
You are now back to the screen where the newly-created "Local Area Connection" icon should be displayed under "Lan or High-Speed Internet." Right click the "Local Area Connection" icon, then select Properties from the dialog box. —> Click the Internet Protocol [TCP/IP], then click the Properties button —> It will give you the options to enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for your machine, or you can obtain one automatically –> Click Ok twice to exit out of everything.
That should set you up.
Now if you have windows Vista…
Start — > Control Panel –> select Classic View –> Double-click on the Network and Sharing Center icon –> In the Sharing and Discovery section, make sure that all items listed are turned Off –> On the left side of the window, select Windows Firewall –> Make sure it is on, then close it –> On the left side of the Network and Sharing Center window, select Manage network connections –> Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and choose Properties –> On the Networking tab, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties –> Make sure that the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain a DNS server address automatically are selected. Click OK –> Click close to exit.
You might have to restart your computer for either of these to take effect. And yeah make sure the other connections are disabled before making new ones.
Good Luck
