And isp or internet service provider is the company that basically provides your home with internet access. In other words, you computer needs a router that connects to a modem which connects to your isp. The isp provides you the ability to reach out to the world wide web. With out an isp, you would have no internet access and you wouldn’t be able to visit websites, play online games, watch online movies, or do anything online. You would be able to nothing.

The first step, is to make sure you have a wireless card installed on all your computers. Most modern day laptops should always have a wireless card already installed, but some desktops might not. You will need to make sure you go out and by an internal or external wireless card for your desktop. Don’t worry, wireless cards are not expansive and should cost anywhere from 20 to 30 bucks.

wireless internet router

Next you need to go out and buy a wireless router. A wireless router is what your wireless cards communicate with when trying to find wireless internet. While you’re at it, you might as well also buy a modem. A modem is what your wireless router communicates with. Essentially it goes like this. You need a computer with a wireless card. The computer communicates with a wireless router. The wireless router than communicates to the modem. And the modem then communicates with your ISP. Your ISP or Internet Service Provider is a company that provides you with internet access. When you order internet through them, many times they will provide you with a modem. So it might be a good idea to ask them if you need to go out and buy the modem yourself. The modem usually connects to an outside phone line or cable connection. You don’t need to worry about this as the ISP should set this up themselves when  you order wireless internet from them.

Suggestions: I would recommend going out and buying a decent quality wireless router and modem. Some cheaper ones might not work as well and you may find yourself having internet problems with it. Usually a simple fix is just turning either the router or modem off for a few seconds and then turning it back on. But I still would recommend going with a good quality router. Also make sure you talk to your ISP about the various internet options they offer. Make sure you get enough bandwidth and speed to fit your needs.

Landline Vs Mobile Internet

A comparison between internet services from my location. I decided that because I have a lot of calls included in my mobile phone package, why should I pay for a landline? So I have used my (now defunct) landline connection and compared it to a mobile internet dongle. Now, in some ways, I have cheated because this dongle is a clever one.It has bits inside that make it work better. Its capabilities will improve as the mobile internet provider (3 UK) expands its roll out of HSPA+. These results are while connected to HSDPA, the current standard. Using these results (and a few retests) I have now fully ditched my landline, saving me the line rental (and in these days of tight purse strings etc…). You will notice that the results form my landline provider are recorded using Linux and the Mobile using Windows. The difference in video quality is down to the software used. In this case Desktop Recorder on Ubuntu(Linux) and Camstudio on Windows. Addendum 27NOV11 I have used this dongle now for a few months and while the infrastructure was being upgraded, my connection and speeds were dire. But I am happy to report that I am now getting 9Mbps download speed with a 57 ms ping. Plus an upload speed of 2Mbps! Very happy bunny. speedtest.net

Does a certain modem actually make a difference on your internet speed?

Does a modem make your internet faster? Or do you get whatever speed your isp provides. It’s kind of hard to explain what I’m asking. Basically is there a modem that will boost internet speed if so where could I look for some.

Broadband Internet In Angeles City area – Fastest Upload Speed?

I’m looking to have broadband hooked up in the Angeles City area. Which company can offer me the highest upload speed? I am currently between the PLDT XCite package and Globes wired broadband ‘upto 3mbps’ deal. Do both companies offer reliable, uninterrupted service?
So far it looks like I’ll be going with PLDT DSL. Seems Globe doesn’t have the ability to either receive or answer email. Not a good quality in an ISP.

PLDTs Max Upload Speeds – XCEL(768) – XCITE (512) – XPERIENCE (256)

Hope this helps someone else.

www.askmisterwizard.com Easy WiFi Setup (The Wired Portions), Segment 3 of 6: Wiring Your Wireless Residential Gateway Equipment. Your Wireless Residential Gateway Equipment will include several connectors, and your ISP should provide enough cables to get you going. Generally you’ll find at least one short Ethernet cable, and one other cable that will hook into one of your walls through your phone or cable TV lines. Once everything is cabled up, you’ll start preparing to “talk” to each of your new devices with a hard-wired PC and web browser. Before you can do that, you’ll need to gather several technical details. The video information below introduces these concepts for beginners.

I am the proud owner of a new MacBook. Now, I need to figure out how to setup my wireless internet at home.?

I have no idea where to begin! Do I need to call the phone company? Or the cable company? Or someone else? And, do I need a router? What gets plugged into the router?

See… I am clueless!

A little advice is much appreciated… and any recommendations as to who the best provider/router is would help, too!

Thanks!

OK.. thanks! This is a good start! I’m starting to see a little bit clearer now. :)

I do not have any kind of internet at home right now, so I’ll need to start from scratch with a new ISP. In your opinion(s), which is better, cable or DSL?
