What is a fast internet speed?

I was wondering if my internet was slow. It doesn’t seem slow but I think it could be faster. My download speed is 2150 kbps and my upload speed is 127 kbps. I am also using a linksys wireless g router.

Apparently you have cheap DSL. You can get cable which screams but you will pay more for it
EDIT: To Steven. The average internet speed is NOT 54mbps! Your lan (home network in case you dont know what a lan is) May run at speeds up to 54 mbps on wireless g, 1000 mbps on n but your internet speed is no where near 54 mbps in residential broadband!
Yinchoy, YOU are wrong too! 1 meg download speeds are the poor mans broadband. I get the fastest there is in the States at 30 mbps on cable broadband. 1 meg is next to pathetic!

the average internet speed is around 54 megabits per second, thats around 1000 kbps or so, my numbers are a bit off,,this is standard dsl/cable speed, anything faster could be considered a fast download speed, your upload speed however is very poor

they hav a rating system that numbers up to the fasts so far the fast are 10 to 12 which i wish i had one of those computers. They are fiber optic wires.

That question depends on the type of connection you are using. If you are wireless, such as with a laptop, the download speed is really good, and the upload is average. If you have an Ethernet cable plugged directly into the router, the download speed is average, and the upload speed is a shade under par.

Wireless network speed can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors such as other internet users, multiple downloads, distance, solid objects between the router, etc. Wired speeds are much more stable but still are affected in part by heavy internet load.

There’s not much you can do to increase the speed of a wired connection, but to improve wireless you can move closer, put the router in an open area in the middle of the house, etc.

Also, some firewalls monitor downloads as they occur, which could slow the overall download.

Everybody is wrong. A download speed of 1024kbps is considered a fast down speed. An upload about 1/3 of that is normal also. But your upload seems a bit strange. Have you considered calling customer support?

At my house I get around 10 Mbps for downloads and for uploads I get roughly 1.0 Mbps. I have Midco cable internet.

  7. OFJ says:

I have regular cable internet (not the Boost which should about double my speeds). I get 14-15Mb/s down and 2-3Mb/s up.

Do you have cable or DSL? What speeds are your provider promoting on commercials and their website?

And Blamay22 is right on. Don’t confuse your home network’s max speed capability with actual bandwidth from your provider. Your ISP speed/bandwidth will almost certainly always be the limiting factor, not your router.
